1822 yılında A.S. Tezimizin asıl konusu olan edebiyat metinlerinde Kafkasya imgesi ise, A.A. Bestujev-Marlinski, A.S. Rus edebiyatında Doğu veya Kafkasya imgesinin Edward Said'in oryantalizm anlayışıyla ele alınıp alınamayacağı tartışma konusudur. Bununla birlikte Doğu imgesi konusunda yapılan çalışmalarda Said'in düşüncelerini göz ardı etmek mümkün değildir. Largely a mystical place for the Russian society until the end of the 18th century, the Caucasus began to attract the attention of the educated class after Georgia became part of the Russian Empire in the early 19th century. Following the publication of Pushkin's poem "A Prisoner in the Caucasus" ("Kavkazskii plennik") in 1822, the Caucasus became a popular theme in Russian literature and the phenomenon "literary Caucasus" (literaturniy Kavkaz) was born. Nevertheless, the study of the Caucasus in Russian literature has so far been limited to a small number of works, which generally tend to focus on the works of a specific literary figure. An analysis of the whole of the 19th century is absent in Russian literature studies in Turkey. In this paper, the birth of the image pertaining to the Caucasus and its peoples in Russian literature in the 19th century, which is generally accepted to be the golden era of Russian literature, is investigated through the paradigm of Edward Said's Orientalism. In addition to the image itself, the thought processes behind the creation of this image will also be looked at. The fact that there are currently no comprehensive studies on this subject makes this study rather topical. As a direct consequence of the westernisation process, which began with the reforms of Petro I, Russian literature and the realm of ideas have been greatly influenced by West European thinking. Therefore, this study will firstly look at the inception and evolution of the image of the "East" in West European thinking and literature. Further on, within the framework of the connection between literature and world of ideas, the birth in Russian thought of the image of the "East" in general and the "Caucasus" in particular will be investigated through the most important sources on the topic: research papers, memoirs and articles. In this paper, the Caucasian image in literature is analysed in the works of such 19th century Russian literary figures as Alexander Bestuzhev-Marlinsky, Alexander S. Pushkin, Mihail Y. Lermontov and Lev N. Tolstoy. Parting way with the Russian literary tradition of compiling all the works of a writer or poet which were written when he was in the Caucasus under the title of 'Caucasian works', only the works in which the subject is Caucasian or is related to the Caucasus are studied. While the actual timeframe for this study is 19th century, the conceptual framework includes earlier periods too, for many ideas of the 19th century have their roots in earlier time periods. The timeframe for the analysis of the Caucasian image in Russian literature, however, is from the late 18th century when Caucasian themes began for the first time to pop up in literary works, to 1912 when Tolstoy's novel "Hadji Murat" came out. While it is debatable whether the image of the East or the Caucasus in Russian literature can be analysed through Edward Said' orientalism framework, no analysis of the image of the East can be made by disregarding Said's take on Orientalism. Therefore, in this thesis an attempt is made to gauge as to what extent were the Russian writers and poets of the first half of the 19th century influenced by main philosophical tenets of the Western Orientalism as progressiveness and Eastern despotism.
