XIV
In this thesis, a traditional house located in Tophane quarter at Alanya Castle has been studied. Alanya, is a coastal city within the borders of Antalya. Its peninsula, situated in its south and reaching 260 meters height, hosted important settlements since ancient times. Due to its easily defendable natural castle and sheltered harbour, it had been preferred by pirates for a long time. in 1221, the region was included in the borders of Anatolian Seljuk State by Alaaddin Keykubad I. Monumental structures in the city like Alanya Castle, Kızılkule, Andızh Mosque and Dockyard were ali buut in Seljuk period. After Anatolian Seljuk State had been demolished, the region was under the control of Anatolian Principalities and then it was included in the borders of the Ottoman Empire in 1471 by Gedik Ahmet Pasha. Today, the city is an important touristic center with its historical places and long beaches. The quarter of Tophane, where the Müftüoğlu House is located, is situated on a hill of 60% slope in the eastern part of Alanya Castle and has been used as a residential area throughout the history. it is an important region where the texture of traditional houses is concentrated in Alanya. But today, due to lack of control and since the Public Investments Plan for Protection Purposes could not been finalized until 1999, new constructions which destroys the traditional texture of the settlement, have increased in Tophane. Müftüoğlu House, the subject of the present study, is located at Çakırlar Çıkmazı, in the upper part of Tophane, it is öne of the houses belonging to the Greeks who had lived in that region before the declaration of Republic. After the Greeks had been imigrated to Greece, this house was given to Cypriots like other Greek houses in the region. in 1935 it had been sold and new owners lived there until 1993. Since then it is rented by the owners who bought the house in 1993 and in the fiıture it is planned to be restorated, used as a residence. The house consists of a basement, ground and first floor. Basement floor has two rooms which are used as stables. At the ground floor, there are three rooms and an entrance. Entrance is providing a connection between these rooms which are used for guests, storage and stables. The first floor has five spaces which can be reached by original wooden stairs, settled on the entrance in the ground floor. These spaces are /zayarfgallery on the main floor], çağnişir[main room of the house], mabeyn[bedroom], bedroom, kitchen and bath and lavatory. Hayat is the first place to reach in the first floor when coming from downstair. Ali rooms have doors to this place and it provides a connection between them. The east side of hayat, facing to scenery, was seperated into two difTerent rooms by additional walls aftervvards. Çağnişir is the most important room in the house like other traditional houses in Alanya and keeps its originality with its cupboards[yz/AM], wooden ceiling and wooden decorations. it is situated with mabeyn on the side of the house facing to XVscenery. Other rooms, bedroom and kitchen, are placed on the west side facing to slope. Bath and lavatory take place on the south facade, extenden outwards. it was learaed from the previous owners that these spaces were demolished in 1960s and then built again with nearly the same forms of the old öne. The house is built with two different construction tecniques; rubble stone and wooden carcase. Rubble stones are used in basement and ground floor. At the first floor, the parts of house facing to scenery are built with wooden carcase while west part was constructed with rubble stone coming from the ground floor. Usage of different tecniques in the first floor is also reflected to the facades and roof; the part of the house constructed in wooden carcase are covered with gutter tiled wooden roof and other parts have solid roof. A second wooden roof was made över the solid roof aftervvards.
