Ahmed Cevdet Paşa toplumun ve devletin varlığını devam ettirebilmesi için tarih ilminin vazgeçilmez olduğu kanaatindedir. Târîh-i Cevdet adlı eserinde onu yönlendiren en büyük neden gelecek kaygısıdır. Devletin içinde bulunduğu durum düşünüldüğünde Cevdet Paşa?nın geçmiş tecrübelerden hareketle geleceği inşa etmede ve daha iyi bir geleceğe ulaşmada tarihin en etkili araç olduğunu düşündüğü söylenebilir. Bu açıdan Türkiye?de tarih disiplinine yaptığı katkı dikkate alındığında çok önemli bir dönüm noktasını teşkil eden Cevdet Paşa?nın tarih tasavvurunun ana ekseninde fayda ilkesi yatmaktadır. Bu tezde öncelikle Cevdet Paşa?nın tarih yazıcılığındaki yerini tespit etmek için kendinden önceki tarih yazıcılığının temel ilkeleri ele alınmış, bu çerçevede Cevdet Paşa?nın tarih tasavvuruyla İbn Haldun?un tarih tasavvuru arasındaki ilişki üzerinde durulmuş ve Cevdet Paşa?nın tarih tasavvurunun temel unsurları ile bu tarih anlayışının somut yansıması olarak onun devlet anlayışı incelenmiştir. Cevdet Pasa's holds the view that history, as a science, is indispensable for society and state in order to maintain their existence. In his book Târîh-i Cevdet, the main concept shaped his approach is the anxiety for the future. Considering the prevailing conditions of state, it can be said that Cevdet Pasa based his thoughts, that history is the most efficient tool to establish a better future, on past experiences.On the other hand, considering him as a milestone due to his contributions to the history discipline in Turkey, principle of utility can be detected at the centre of his conception of history. In addition, the relation between Cevdet Pasa?s and Ibn Haldun?s conception of history will be a part of this dissertation. So are the principles of historiography prior to Cevdet Pasa to allocate him in the historiography. And his conception of state investigated as his conception of history and its substantial reflection.
