Bu çalışmada 20.Yüzyılda heykelin, sanat akımları ile olan ilişkileri, en çok öne çıkan örnekler üzerinden incelenerek, heykel sanatının gelişim sürecinde, geçirmiş olduğu değişimler ele alınmıştır.İlk çağdan 19.Yüzyılın sonlarına kadar, heykel dinin ve toplumsal kurumların belirlediği sınırların içerisinde varlık gösterebilmiştir. Modernizm'in başlangıcıyla birlikte, heykel bu sınırlarından kurtulmuştur. Heykelde Modernizm Rodin ile birlikte başlamaktadır. Heykel bu süreçte temsil işlevinden bağımsız olarak kendi varlığını sorgulamaya başlayabilmiştir. Marcel Duchamp ve Hazır Nesneleriyle birlikte ise heykel'de kavram biçimin önüne geçmiştir. Birinci bölümde modernizm'in tanımı, heykel üzerinde olan etkileri ve bu süreçte ortaya çıkan akımların, heykelde görülen değişimler ile olan ilişkileri ele alınmıştır.İkinci Dünya Savaşı sonrasında başlayan postmodernist süreçte ise heykel önceki dönemlerdeki klasik tanımlamalarının ötesine geçmiş ve diğer sanat dalları ile arasındaki sınırları aşmıştır. Ekonomik üstünlüğün Amerika'nın eline geçmesiyle birlikte Avrupa sanat alanındaki eski üstünlüğünü yitirmiştir. Amerika'da gelişen Soyut Dışavurumculuk ve sonrasında bu akıma tepki olarak ortaya çıkan diğer akımlar, heykelin gelişim sürecinde etkili olmuşlardır. Bu süreç aynı zamanda heykel'in ne olup olmadığının daha fazla sorgulandığı bir süreçtir. İkinci ve üçüncü bölümlerde postmodenizm'in tanımı ile birlikte, ikinci dünya savaşı sonrası ve özellikle 1960 sonrası sanatsal hareketlerdeki değişimler ve bu değişimlerin heykele olan etkileri örnek eserler üzerinden incelenmiştir.
In this study, via of the relations with the statue in the 20th century art movements, examined over the most prominent examples, the art of sculpture in the process of development, the changes had been discussed.From the first era until the end of the 19th century, sculpture was able to being within the boundaries set by religion and social institutions. With the onset of Modernism recovered from the boundaries of sculpture. Modernism begins with Rodin at sculpture. In this process, sculpture has been able to question its own existence as an independent function is no longer represented. As to Marcel Duchamp and the ready-mades, concept got ahead of the form. In the first part, the definition of modernism, its influence on sculpture and emerging movements are discussed, together with the relationship based on this process in regard with the changes in sculpture.With Postmodernist process started after the Second World War, sculpture got ahead of its own classical definitions of the previous periods and has exceeded the boundaries between other branches of art. European lost its former superiority in the field of art with that the economic superiority was captured by the America. Abstract Expressionism which developed in this environment and then other movements arised to reaction to this movement have been effective in the development process of the sculpture. This process is also the process that further questioned what the sculpture is. In the second and thirth parts together with the definition of postmodernism, after the Second World War and especially after 1960s, changes in artistic movements and the effects of these changes to the sculpture examined through the model works.
