In this study, the characteristic profile of the Ottoman costume books produced in 1770-1810 are examined within the historical, economical, political, social and cultural aspects of the period. The new facts obtained through the study about this period in which the local and foreign styles were get closer to each other, give an opportunity to discuss the European influence on Ottoman painting. In the 18th century, considering the main aspects in the art production, it was evident that there was a big demand of costume books in which all the Ottoman mankinds are shown, includind a range from the sultan to the street salesmans. The main subjects of the study; such as the reasons of this demand, the ways how the figures in costume books were spread out in Europe, the role of the painters in art market, the importance of ethnical identities, the relationships between the producer, the customer and the artist; directed the study towards a central figure Kostantin Kapıdağlı, who by this study is appeared to be a painter of the costume books. The works of art of his studio; with the union of the traditional patterns and re-production of them for different demands were integrated with a `new? concept and are called The Costume Albums of New Period.Kostantin Kapıdağlı is an Ottoman artist adopting Greek, Turkish, Christian, Moslem, European and Persian cultures, merging the same with his own culture, religion, language. He has both persisted with his strong religious and ethnical ties, painting iconas and wall frescoes on religious building structures, and at the same time creating some very essential works of art for the court of an Islamic centred society. Album paintings of his studio diffusing around Europe and reflecting the Ottoman image were copied for many years reproduced and transferred onto canvass by several European artists. It has been set forth under this thesis that the purchasers of albums for Ottoman garments were people like ambassadors, diplomats, travellers inquisitive about the Ottoman world, dynasts, soldiers, artists, engineers, scientists passing from or assigned to Istanbul on duty, those participating in observation committees, collectioners, as well as Orientalists. In order to address the new and cultured bourgeois society emerging in 18th Century Europe, generation of works of art and publications, creation of theatres, operas, balls focussed on the Turk, printing houses releasing publications that coincide with the encyclopaedia tradition of the Enlightenment, increase in the number of Grand Tours with an influence of the antiquity, support provided to nationalism by wide circles following the French Revolution, requirement for visual archives as well as information concerning publications, projects, reports to display various ethnical societies, particularly the Greek culture, on the other hand the soldiers and scientists who were the implementers of the mission set forth by the nations in search of colonies, particularly those from France and Britain, recording everything they saw and observed might be counted amongst causes direct and otherwise, increasing the demand for such albums. In conclusion, it has been realized that Ottoman garment albums produced in the course of this forty-year period were works of art not only addressing inquisitive buyers of a classified products of an ambient generated by the Age of Enlightenment, but also works shaped by a policy directed and consciously implemented, depending on political, social and economical circumstances.
