SUMMARY Ali Paşa of Yannina was born in a small Albanian town called Tepedelen. His father Veli died when he was a child. He was grown up by his mother Hamko. His youth passed between family rivalaries and when he has cought by the mutasarrıf of Avlonya, Kurt Ahmet Paşa he was a young bandit and then he entered to his service. Later on Ali married with the daughter of the mutasarrıf of Delivine Kaplan Paşa, this marrige with Ã?mmügülsüm let him to be member of a powerfull family in the region. By time he become more powerfull and in 1784 he apponinted to the rank of "mir-i miranhk" and also become the mutasarrıf of Delvine. After a year of performance in 1786, he become the mutasarrıf of the province of Tirhala and in 1787 of Yannina. By the way he also appointed as the Derbendler BaşbuÄYu. The year 1787, become the beginning point of the 33 years of his domination in Yannina, Albania, Greece and Morea and of his sons. In the 1787 Austrian-Russian war, 1798 French occupation of Egypt, Seven Island question and in 1802, revolts in Rumelia he pay a good service to the central authority. He then charged in 1804 Serbian revolt and in the 1806 Russian campaign. As AH Paşa become stronger his obeidence toward Ottoman sovereignity weakened and he acted more independantly. On the other hand Sultan Mahmud II tried to centralize the empire and broke down the force of local powers. At this point" Ali Pasha's attemp to suicide one of his rival-that is Ismail Pasha Bey- in Istanbul gave the Sultan the pretext of issuign a ferman and fetva for him, so he declard as fermanlı. In 1820 troops were sent from Istanbul but M Pasha resisted and went to Yannina. The struggle between Ottoman troops and Ali Pasha of Yannina lasted until the February of 1822 and ended with his execution. 163
