From the 19th century, an extraordinary development in technology has affected
construction technology along with many fields. Developments on construction
materials and innovations in the field of construction as a result of industrial
revolution have led to a gradual transformation of massive external walls to
relatively light and modern façades. These external wall systems freed of their loadbearing
function, called curtain wall, are used frequently nowadays due to several
advantages such as being light weight, shortening the construction process, and the
ability to be tested beforehand so it can be envisaged that they can fulfill particular
performance standards. Curtain wall systems are generally engaged with reinforced
concrete load-bearing systems especially in Turkey, owing to many reasons such as
cost and construction traditions. Coalescence of these particular systems, one of
which is industrial and other one is generally formed on site, causes some technical
'tensions' in design and practice.
It is expected from a curtain wall to fulfill several performance requirements in order
to obtain the main purpose of constructing an external closure like providing
protection against severe climate conditions, security, storage, etc. Since the curtain
wall system is a holistic engineering product for the purpose of satisfying expected
requirements, it can be said that their joints with the building are critical parts of the
system. It is inevitable for curtain wall systems to come together with the building
components so that they create the whole building. So, it is expected for these critical
areas to perform as seamless as the building itself. Since it is very hard to overcome a
wide range and number of performance criteria for a designer at once, a systematic
approach is needed in design process. It is more likely to gain more qualified results
with regards to performance by using design methods which take the design process
as systematical sub-processes. At this point, questions like 'Which performance
criteria should be considered when designing these joints?' and 'Which of these
criteria are more important and have higher priorities?' become more of an issue.
The aim of this study is to customize the design criteria existing in the construction
literature by examining them in the context of curtain wall and building integration,
and assigning their relative values by utilizing opinions of experts in the curtain wall
industry. Thereby, the main goal is to offer a pre-assessed check list as a design aid
tool so as designers to use in a systematic design process.
In the context of this study, building sub-systems have been explained in subsections
of building structure systems, building element systems and building service
systems. Four building elements more likely to be integrated with curtain walls have
been also examined – exterior walls, floors, roofs and interior walls. Since the
subject of this study is an integration issue, two particular sources about
architectural integration have been explicated. Architectural integration might occur
among thebuilding systems or within a building system. Besides, there are three architectural
integration modes known as physical integration, visual integration and performance
integration. Since performance is an integral and the most important factor for
system integration and also it is relatively easy to have objective judgment on this
issue, it has been proceeded with the performance approach in the study. Several
descriptions in the literature have been investigated for curtain wall systems, so as to
designate the content of the study in terms of product. Additionally, development of
the curtain walls and their various classifications are reviewed as well.
Besides two main goals of the study, there are also two sub-goals to reach main
goals. One of these sub-goals is to determine 'design sub-processes' in order to
specify which design criteria should be used on which design sub-process. For this
purpose, concept of design, different approaches to design and design theories that
consider design processes systematically in the literature have been presented.
Moreover, architectural design sub-processes defined by professional associations
from different countries have been researched. These sub-processes which are
changeable regarding to countries have been examined and converged to common
definitions in order to be used as a tool for the check list evaluation. Another subgoal
is to identify typical aluminum curtain wall and building joint details in order to
define the context in which design criteria are to be evaluated. In order to identify
typical aluminum curtain wall and the building integration situations; written sources
like publications compiled from completed projects, and technical literature for
façade systems have been reviewed; and constructed buildings have been examined.
Details obtained from this research have been conceptualized, so that they can
represent numerous scenarios.
Methods used for generating performance criteria for determined junction details
have been explained, performance criteria gained from sources devoted to
constructional design and/or exterior wall design have been gathered and analyzed.
Then, these criteria have been compiled as a recommended check list for designers to
be used in design processes. For assigning relative values of criteria in the check list,
a field survey has been utilized in order to reach current and relatively objective data.
Methods used in field survey have also been explained comprehensively. In the field
survey, twenty experts in the curtain wall industry have been interviewed face to
face. Experts were chosen among independent façade consultants, façade
consultancy firms, manufacturers and contractors in Turkey with minimum 10 years'
of experience. In the interviews, experts were asked to assign relative values of
design criteria and to evaluate them in respect to design sub-process in which they
should be considered. For this purpose, design criteria have been compiled in a table
that allowed both evaluations to be done at once by experts. The scale in assigning
relative values is 'Z: mandatory, '+: important' and 'X: less important'. Design
subprocesses presented to experts are 'K: conceptual', 'U: construction drawings' and 'İ:
shop drawing'. All answers from experts have been also compiled on a table that
shows both visual and numerical results. Interviews and critic of the results with
regard to category of design criteria have been examined.
Summaries of the interviews with the verbally-obtained data have been presented.
Evaluations of experts for the check list have been analyzed with regard to relative
value and design sub-processes. These analyses have also been presented with charts
showing percentages. All design criteria with experts' evaluations have been compiled
on a chart that allows all results to be analyzed both visually and
numerically with percentages. Consequently, results are presented with the
prominent criteria of both relative values and design sub-processes. Additionally,
results in the context of main titles of performance criteria have been reviewed and
presented with a general approach.
These results might be reconsidered and recompiled on project basis with regard to
particular features such as environmental effects, user's requirements, typology and
function. This checklist may be used as is for some particular needs, or it may be
taken as a pre-evaluated reference and be improved upon by the designer for their
own needs. There are no academic programs in Turkey that specialize on façade
systems yet. Therefore, majority of the experts interviewed have their experiences
from in-company trainings, long-term employment in various departments and/or
field services. As it can be seen in Figure 6.2 (experts' characteristics), only 10% of
the experts interviewed have attended to education programs about façade systems
abroad and earned the title "certified façade engineer". Results of this study present
experts' interpretations without any academic education on façade system and the
current situation in Turkey. |
