THE CRYSTALLIZATION BEHAVIOUR, MACHINABILITY AND BIOACTIVITY CHARACTERIZATION OF SODIUM-POTASSIUM MICA AND FLOURAPATITE CONTAINING GLASS CERAMICS SUMMARY Machinable glass ceramics are materials produced by the similar production methods of melting and casting that all glass ceramics undergo with controlled nucleation and crystallization. The property that makes machinable glass ceramics different and special is that they obtain proper microstructure and microhardness value that allows machinability after a heat treatment is applied. Machinable glass ceramics have high electrical and mechanical properties besides mechanical forming. These materials can be machined by metal machining devices after transforming to crystalline form. The forming methods include sawing, milling, turning, drilling, tapping, grinding and polishing. In the first stage of the study, glass composition containing different ratios of sodium potasium mica and flourapatite have been prepared, mixed and casted at proper temperatures. The glass produced after casting is milled and sieved for differantial thermal analysis (DTA). According to DTA results, exothermic and endothermic heat effects are determined. In order to figure out which heat effect belongs to which phase, XRD analysis was applied to the powder specimens. For the microstructure analysis, micro hardness and machinability tests, specimens in cylindrical and in disc form were casted in the second section of this study. Thermal treatment methods was applied to the glass specimens in dependent with the XRD results. The microstructure of these specimens was determined with the scanning electron microscope and the hardness values by the microhardness testing device. After obtaining these results, the machinability of the specimens in disc form was tested by drilling. As a conclusion of first stage of the experimental part, an initial endothermic heat effect representing the glass transition temperature and three exothermic heat effects representing the crytallization were detected at DTA result of first composition. It can be seen that the first exothermic heat effect represents the crystallization of flourapatite and the second represents the crystallization of mica. The third exothermic peak represents the crystallization of diopside and forsterite which forms due to the degradation of flourapatite and mica. A single endothermic peak showing the glass transition and a single exothermic peak showing the crystallization of both phases have been observed from DTA results of other two compositions. The controlled crystallization heat treatment programs are determined according to these results. XllThe in- vitro bioactivity characterization in simulated body fluid (SBF) was applied to the specimen showing the best machinablity according to the microstructure analysis, microhardness and machinablity test results of the cylinder and disc shaped specimens after the heat treatment processes. Thin film XRD analysis have been made for investigating the phases which were precipitated on the surface of the specimens. Microstructure analysis of the surfaces are made by using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the surface images are investigated according to the results. The ion exchange between the specimens which are placed in SBF and the solution is determined using Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) technique. The molecular binding character of the phases which are formed on the surfaces of the specimens are investigated by using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer. As a result of the second stage of the experimental part, it is observed that increasing the amount of flourapatite also increases the tendency of crystallization behaviour in the compositions studied which leads to a decrease at the transparency of the glasses after casting. In all three compositions a very thin microstructure is developed and changes have been observed with increasing temperatures in these cases. In the high temperature crystallization processes that cause the increase in the volume fraction of mica the microhardness of glass ceramics decrease, in accordance, the machinability increases. Moreover, microstructure also effects the machinability property not only the glass compositions. According to the microstructure and microhardness results the machinability properties are determined and in-vitro bioactivity characterization is applied to the specimen showing the best machinability. The results of the bioactivity analysis showed that hydroxycarbonaapatite layer was precipitated on the surfaces of the specimens and the thickness of the layer was increased according to the time. xiu
