Simgeler, günlük dilden edebî sanatlara kadar uzanan yapılardır. Birçok geleneksel simgenin anlamı belirsizdir; tek ve sabit bir anlamı işaret etmezler. Bu sebeple en erken zamanlardan günümüze kadar simgeyle ilgili genel bakış sunan bir çalışma yapılmamıştır. Fakat simgesel gelenek, edebiyattan felsefeye, mitolojiden din tarihine, mantıktan psikoloji vb.ne kadar pek çok disiplinde anlam derinliği kazanmıştır. Simgeler ve simgecilik hakkında araştırma yaparken, genellikle onlara karşı iki farklı yaklaşımın ortaya çıktığı görülür. Bazıları için konu tamamen mazide kalmıştır ve bugün mantıklı bir kişinin böyle bir konuyu ikinci defa düşünmesine gerek yoktur. Diğerleri ise bunun tersini düşünürler: simgenin entelektüel dünyanın anlaşılmasının anahtarı olduğuna inanırlar. Bu çalışmada ikinci bakış açısı benimsenmiştir. Çünkü bir yazarın eserlerindeki en dip katmanlardan biri olan simgesel yapıyı çözmek, yazarın kendisini anlamada yol haritası sağlar. Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, gerek üslubu gerekse disiplinlerarası okumalarıyla Modern Türk edebiyatının tekâmül sürecinde müstakil bir yere sahiptir. Hikâye, roman, şiir, deneme, günlük, tenkit ve edebiyat tarihi gibi çok geniş bir yazma alanına sahiptir. Bu tezin amacı, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar'ın eserlerinde simgesel formları nasıl kullandığını ve kendi simgeleştirme yöntemini nasıl oluşturduğunu tespit etmektir. Böylelikle simgenin yazarın edebî değerine sağladığı katkı ortaya konulacaktır. Tez dört ana bölümden oluşmaktadır. Birinci bölümde simge teriminin kuramsal çerçevesi çizilmiştir. Ayrıca simge ile işaret, imge, alegori, metafor ve mit gibi simgesel formların ilişkisi ortaya konulmuştur. İkinci bölümde Batı ve Türk edebiyatında simgesel anlatımın algılanma biçimi ve temsilcilerinden bahsedilmiştir. Üçüncü bölümde Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar'ın romanlarındaki simgeler yorumlanmıştır. Symbols, are structures that they extend into the realm of everyday language and figures of speech. Many traditional symbols are ambiguous; they cannot be pointed out as having a single, constant meaning. For this reason, there has been no work offering an overview of symbolism from earliest times until the present. But the symbolic tradition has gained depth in many disciplines, from literature to philosophy, mythology to history of religion, logic to psychology, and so on. When researching symbols and symbolism, usually seen that two very different attitudes toward them. To some the subject is utterly antiquated, and the sort of thing to which no sensible person should give a second thought in this day. Others think to the opposite extreme: they believe that symbol is the key to understanding the intellectual world. In this study a second perspective has been adopted. Because solving the symbolic structure, which is one of the deep layer in the author's work, provides a roadmap to recognize the author's ownself. Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar has a individual situation in evolution process of Modern Turkish literature with his literary style and interdisciplinary studies. He has a comprehensive writing area such a story, novel, poetry, essay, diary, criticism and literary history. The purpose of this thesis, is to determine how Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar uses symbolic forms in his works and creates his own symbolization method. In this way, will be revealed contribution of symbol to the literary value of the author. The thesis consists of four main parts. In the first chapter, is drawn the theoretical framework of the symbol term. In addition is expressed the relationship between symbols and symbolic forms such as sign, image, allegory, metaphor and myth. In the second chapter, are mentioned the perception of the symbolic narration in Western and Turkish literature and representatives of symbolism. In the third chapter, are interpreted the symbols in Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar's novels. In the fourth chapter, it is determined the symbolization method of the author.
