Klee ve Kandinsky'in kendi sanatlarına bakışı, müziğe bakışları,müziği kendi sanatlarında kullanma biçimleri ortaya konacaktır.
ABSTRACTTHE EFFECT OF MUSIC IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURYPAINTING AND THE ANALYSIS OF THIS EFFECT FOCUSING ONKLEE AND KANDINSKYThe scope of this study, which analyses the effects of music on painting interms of historical and structural relationships between the aforementionedfields of art, is the first half of the twentieth century. There occurred someradical changes both in painting and in music at the beginning of the twentiethcentury, and that fact has become a factor determining the period which mustbe dealt in this study. Another important limitation is about the painters whomare concerned in the study. Vasily Kandinsky, one of the foremost abstractpainters who has a significant role in the twentieth century art, and Paul Klee, lived in the same period as Kandinsky and became a focal figure in the historyof art with his characteristic style and structural analyses, have been selectedfor the purpose of the study.Especially the first half of the twentieth century is a very active period forpainting and music relationship, and of course, this interaction is not onlylimited to these two painters. Der Blaue Riter, an art association which wasestablished in this period and both Kandinsky and Klee were its members, published many articles which show their support for this interdisciplinarymutual effect. Despite living in the same period, being the members of thesame associations and workshops, and having strong relationships with eachother, there are striking differences between Klee?s and Kandinsky?sapproaches towards music and the way they used music as a tool in their art.In addition to this, it must be highlighted that both of the painters had musicaltraining in their childhood and then kept music as a part of their lives.Kandinsky?s and Klee?s musical views found expression in their arts, and thehuge number of their explanations for music and painting has led theresearcher often encounter these two painters throughout the literature review. That is also a reason for focusing on these two painters in this field, wherethere is a lack of sufficient resources. In the first chapter of this study, a general introduction to the research subjecthas been made by considering the historical aspect of painting-musicinteraction. The subject has been tried to be made familiar by means ofpresentations of the periods when the two fields of art approached to eachother and the artists exemplifying the key points. In the second chapter, the shared concepts of painting and music are presented.A relationship between the artistic features of painting and music is tried to beestablished. Additionally, the values of these shared concepts such as harmony, composition, time-place are tried to be determined for both fields of art.In the following chapter, firstly the evolutions both in painting and music inthe twentieth century, which is the research period of this study, areunderlined. With the idea that the move from the naturalistic view to theabstract in the field of painting and the move from the tonal system to theatonal system in the field of music have supported the interdisciplinary mutualeffect in some cases, the evolutions are displayed. The shared purpose ofmaking some radical changes in the systems of painting and music is theintention to purify art. After covering the artistic development in the twentiethcentury, Klee and Kandinsky, the painters who lived in this period and havesome works about painting and music relationship, are presented. Klee?s andKandinsky?s views about their own art and about music, and the ways theyuse music in their art are also highlighted in this chapter. The purpose of this study is to express the reasons for the existence of therelationship between painting and music through a structural approach. Thelimited number of studies on this subject and the limited number of differentapproaches to the subject are other reasons which directed the researchinterest on this subject.
