TARLABAŞI'NDA YAŞAYAN ÇOCUKLARIN ÇEVRESEL ALGI SÜREÇLERİNİN BİLİŞSEL HARİTALAR YÖNTEMİYLE İRDELENMESİ ÖZET Tarlabaşı, çöküntü bölgesi olarak tanımlanabilecek sosyal ve fiziksel yapı gösteren mahalleler içeren bir yerleşim bölgesidir. Şehrin merkezinde yer alması ve şehrin diğer bölgeleri için zararlı sosyal oluşumlar sergilemesi, bu bölgede kentsel dönüşümün gerçekleşmesi gerekliliğini işaret etmektedir. Bu bölgede uygulanacak kentsel dönüşüm çalışmalarında neyin sürdürülebilir olması gerektiği ortaya konulmalıdır. Bu doğrultuda tez kapsamında, sürdürülebilirlik kavramı, sürdürülebilir şehirler, sosyal sürdürülebilirlik ve sürdürülebilirlik kavramıyla birlikte düşünülen sosyal eşitlik, yaşanabilirlik, katılım kavramları açıklanacaktır. İstanbul kent merkezi, kent merkezinin dönüşümü ve çöküntü bölgelerinin oluşumu açıklanarak sürdürülebilirlik kavramının İstanbul şehir merkezindeki çöküntü bölgelerinde ne şekilde uygulanabileceği tartışılacaktır. Bu bölgede yaşayan çocukların sosyal ve algısal gelişimi tezin konusunun oluşumunda önemli noktalardan biri olarak düşünülmüştür. Çocukların sağlıksız çevredeki yaşanılan, algı süreçlerine etki eden mekânsal oluşumlar, söz konusu bir kentsel dönüşüm projesinde çocukların çevresel değerlendirmelerinin tasarım girdisi olarak ele alınmasının araştırılması alan çalışmasının çıkış noktasını oluşturmaktadır. Alan çalışması, çocukların mahalleleri hakkındaki bilgi, düşünce ve çevresel algılarını araştırmak amacıyla bölgedeki bir ilkokulda, 4. sınıf öğrencileriyle yapılan anket çalışmasını ve haritalandırma çalışmasını içermektedir. A RESEARCH STUDY FOR UNDERSTANDING THE PROCESS OF ENVIROMENTAL PERCEPTION OF CHILDREN LIVING IN TARLABASI, THROUGH COGNITIVE MAPS SUMMARY Tarlabaşı is one of the urban regions, consists of neighbourhoods which can be considered to be slum in both social and physical appearance. The necessity for the urban transformation occurs in this part of the city, as it appeared to be in the center of the city and also as it has some social constructions dangerous for the urban life. Through this urban transformation studies, what is to be sustained in this region, has to be carefully considered. For this reason, throughout the study; the term sustainability, sustainable cities, social sustainability and besides, the terms: social equity, participation and livability within sustainability is explained. By examining the Istanbul city center, the transformation of the center and the development of slums in the city; it is discussed how the term sustainability can be realised through these kinds of regions appeared to be in the city center. The social and cognitive development of the children living in the slums of the city center, is one of the most important issues that shape the construction of this research study. The life of children within impoverished environments, the spatial characteristics of the neighborhood that influence their cognition, and the search of the ways how these childrens' environmental understandings can effect such urban transformation in realisation process, is the focus of this research study. The case study structuring the main part of the thesis involves questionnaires and mapping studies with the 4 th class students in a school at this region, for searching the childrens' knowledge, thoughts and environmental perception about their neighbourhood. xvi
