The aim of the project is to examine performance and design details of eccentrically braced frames, comment on the rules given in the new Turkish Seismic Design Code which published on the year 2007 and to compare performance of the eccentrically braced frames with moment frames under earthquake action. For this aim, detailed examination of especially recent studies are done. After that, a six story building is designed according to the rules given in the new Turkish Seismic design Code. For the design of frame elements, TS 648, Turkish Specification for Steel Structures, is used. As the method of calculations, allowable stress design is chosed. The structure is analized according to load combination that is given in ASCE 7-05 for allowable stress design. AISC 360-05 (Specification for Structural Buildings) is used for design along with TS 648.Firstly, 3D model of the structure is formed and solved with ETABS. Earthquake loads impacted to the structure with Equivalent Earthquake Loads Method. The floor system of the structure is thought to be reinforced concrete system applied on the construction site. As the eccentrically braced frame type, chevron brace is prefered. For the link elements, the provisions of 2007 Turkish seismic code is applied. Short link elements, which is proven with experimental researches to have a great performance when exposed to seismic effects are used.Secondly, it has been thought that, the system is consist of moment frames in one direction, and eccentrically braced frames on the perpendicular direction. Same sections are used for the columns and beams with eccentrically braced system in both direction and the period and story drifts of moment frame system is found. Also, analysis of the beams and columns are done according to Turkish Seismic Design Code.In the end, the two systems are compared for the earthquake performance and the element analysis for the two system according to Turkish Seismic Design Code are examined. |
