Bu çalısma, 2001 yılında Nobel Edebiyat Ödülünü kazanan V.S. Naipaulhakkındadır. Naipaul'un bu çalısmada ele alınması için uygun görülmesinin enönemli nedenlerinden birisi, sömürge insanlarına ve toplumlarına elestirel birtutum takındığından dolayı tartısmalı bir yazar olmasıdır. Bu çalısmanın amacı,V.S. Naipaul'un dört romanı olan ?The Mystic Masseur?, ?A House for MrBiswas?, ?The Mimic Men?, ve ?A Bend in the River? in incelenmesiyleNaipaul'un anlatıcı ve karakterlerinin post-kolonyal toplumları ve karakterlerielestirirken ikircikli bir tutum içinde olduklarını ve bunun sonucundasömürgecinin de elestirildiğini ortaya çıkarmaktır. Naipaul, ?ngiliz ?mparatorluğutarafından sömürgelestirilen bir ülkede doğduğundan ve anılan dört romanın dapost-kolonyal ülkelerde geçtiğinden, bu çalısmada post-kolonyal edebi elestirikuramı uygulanmıstır. Bu amaçla, Edward W. Said, Homi K. Bhabha, ve BillAshcroft gibi belli baslı kuramcılar tarafından gelistirilmis olan ?ikirciklilik?,?ikili bakıs açısı?, ?sömürgeci önyargı kalıpları?, ?taklit?, ?yersizlik?, ?veyurtsuzluk? gibi kavramlar kullanılmıstır. Bu çalısma göstermistir ki, V.S.Naipaul'un anlatıcı ve karakterleri, post-kolonyal toplumu ve bireylerinielestirirken aynı zamanda sömürgeciyi de elestirmektedirler. Bu sonuca,Naipaul'un anlatıcı ve karakterlerinin post-kolonyal toplum ve karakterlerineyönelik sergiledikleri ikircikli yaklasımların incelenmesiyle varılmıstır.
This study is about V.S. Naipaul, the winner of the Nobel Prize inLiterature in 2001. Naipaul has been chosen for this study because he is acontroversial writer, who is criticised for his critical attitude towards colonialpeople and societies. The aim of this study has been to show, through the study offour novels of V.S. Naipaul, ?The Mystic Masseur?, ?A House for Mr Biswas?,?The Mimic Men?, and ?A Bend in the River?, that Naipaul?s narrators andcharacters apply an ambivalent attitude in their criticism of postcolonial societiesand characters, with the consequence that this criticism is applied on the coloniseras well. As Naipaul is a writer who was born in a country that was colonised by theBritish Empire, and the settings of the before-mentioned four novels are postcolonialsocieties, the post-colonial method of analysis has been applied in thiswork. To do this, post-colonial concepts and terms like ?ambivalence?, ?doublevision?, ?colonial stereotypes?, ?mimicry?, ?displacement? and ?homelessness?,which have been developed by some major theorists like Edward W. Said, Homi K.Bhabha, and Bill Ashcroft et. al., have been employed. This analysis has shownthat V. S. Naipaul?s narrators and characters not only criticise the postcolonialsociety and colonials, but also criticise the coloniser, which has been illustratedstudying the double-structure, or, ambivalence in their approach to thepostcolonial society and characters depicted in Naipaul?s novels.
