Nowadays, although there exist many methods for monitoring polymerization almostnone of them is able to monitor the polymerization process in real-time with greatprecision. To solve this problem we have tested, in this thesis, the spectroscopic methodsbased on the interpretation of the change in the emission and the absorption spectra, and viewing the lifetimes of injected fluoroprobes to monitor the change in theirmicroenvironment.Pyranine fluoroprobe in trace amount was placed in the acrylamide pre-polymersolution and fluorescence spectra of this fluoroprobe were monitored. It was shown thatreal time monitoring of the free radical polymerization of acrylamide can be performedby this method, and it is anticipated that this method can also be used for many kinds ofmonomers.Pyranine binds chemically to the functional ends of the growing polymer chains overOH groups via radical addition, and, at the same time, three 3SO? groups on the probemolecule electrostatically interact with the regions of excess positive charges appearedon the amide groups of the polyacrylamide chains due to the protonation effectproduced by water. Chemical bonding cause a shift, from 515 to 406nm in maxima ofthe emission spectra, and the electrostatic interactions cause the shift in the maximafrom 406nm to approximately 430nm during the reaction. The change in the fluorescence intensity is compared with our theoretical models andmonomer conversion experiment, and it was observed that fluorescence intensity isdirectly proportional to the monomer conversion measured during the polymerization. Our theoretical model was agreed best with the experimental results. In the one part of this thesis, we have designed a very sensitive pH-meter which is able towork in aqueous media of 0 |
