The positivism which determines the methodology of Durkheim as anepistemological ground of ethical phenomena was primarily analyzed with theconceptual meanings of ?knowledge?, ?rationality? and ?human nature? in thetraditional philosophy. The fundamental aim of such analysis is to state the dilemmaswhich are manifested by the fact-value distinction developed with empiricism jointedto positivism in respect of understanding the moral phenomena. The thought ofAristotle which tells that the ethical concepts should be merely understood on aground of ethos became determinative on the understanding of Durkheim who seesthe society as the source of ethics. However his methodological attitude wasdependant to the social fact which was understood as the observable material aspectsunder the influence of empiricism. Thus the fact-value distinction was examined inthe following pages of this thesis. Empiricist epistemology was replaced by theunderstanding on the ideas derived from only the sense-datum and their abstractionsinstead of Plato?s Ideas transcendental to the rationality. Consequently the formationprocess of the ground needed to understand the ethical concepts was analyzed withthe sense/feeling derived from the first person?s perspective instead of metaphysicalconcepts. Then it was attempted to manifest that the description of human natureestablished by such kind of a perspective would inevitably bear a characterabstracted from its own ethos. The positivism which formed an understanding of science on the base of thecomprehension about the observable fact inherited by Durkheim from empiricism, itsapplication to ethical phenomena, and the establishment process of a ?science ofmorals? were also examined in the paper. Durkheim who thought that it wasnecessary to act due to the social facts instead of the individual during the realizationof such aim, criticized the individualism of empiricism with the encouragement ofKant?s criticism on empiricism. Thus Kant?s metaphysics of ethics was given placeas the determinant of Durkheim?s empirical acknowledgements in this thesis. Hetransformed the basic concepts of Kant, found the source of ethics and knowledge inthe society and he even thought that the divine entity would be the society in itself towhich the ethics necessarily transmitted. However Durkheim could not eliminate theproblems borne by the concept of ?fact? in empiricism within the project ofestablishment of a ?science of ethics?. Because though Durkheim saw the society asthe source of ethics, he continued to consider the source of ?scientific? knowledge ofsocial facts as the sense experiment which he also thought as the source of all ideas. So though the ethical phenomena were considered as a social representation oneeach, it was asserted that being a subject of sociology was merely possible with theexteriorities and material aspects of them. In this way, it was attempted to stress thediscord between Durkheim?s conceptions on the ontological character of society andhis methodology predicted to provide the chances to penetrate to its knowledge inthis thesis. The problem of this research aimed to be able to manifest and analyze isthe failure of empiricist and positivist sociological methodologies in providing anepistemological position to comprehend and examine the characters of ethicalphenomena with the instance of the methodological attitude of Durkheim. |
