Doğa ile çalışan bir sanatçı olarak bu alanda neler yapıldığını öğrenmek istedim. Araştırmalarım beni sanat tarihine yöneltti. Doğamn, Stonehenge'den günümüze zaman zaman çeşitli nedenlerle sanatta kullanıldığını gördüm. Giriş bölümünde "sanatta doğa ile çalışmak"la ne kastettiğimi anlattım ve insanın doğa ile olan bağını sanat aracılığıyla ifade etmesinin önemine değindim. Bu araştırma benim 1960'lann sonunda gelişmeye başlayan Yoksul Sanat ve Arazi Sanatı gibi akımlar ile düşüncelerini doğayla ya da doğa içinde çalışarak ifade eden diğer Avrupalı sanatçıları, doğayla çalışan çağdaş Türk sanatçılarım ve son olarak da beni doğayla ya da doğada çalışmaya iten nedenleri daha iyi anlamamı sağladığım zannediyorum. 1960'lann sonunda sanatçıların doğayla çalışmaya başlaması ilk bakışta şaşırtıcı bir yenilik gibi gelse de - ki bir bakıma bu böyledir - geçmişle, özellikle tematik anlamda birçok bağlantısı olduğunu gördüm. Bu tarihten önce doğa, kutsallığı ve geçiciliği ifade etmek, insanın görevlerini hatırlatmak, dinsel ve siyasal düşünceleri desteklemek, kurulu düzeni değiştirmek ya da protesto etmek için bir araç olarak kullanılmış olsa da, 1960'larm sonunda bu temaların çoğunun yeniden gündeme geldiği görülür. Bütün bu verilerden hareketle en önemli değişikliğin, bazı temaların ağırlık kazanmasına karşın, aslmda konu değil, ifade yöntemi, kullanılan yer, malzeme ve eylem olduğu sonucuna vardım. Bu değişiklikleren çoğu, 1900- 1960 arasmda gelişen yeni düşüncelerin zemin hazırladığı görülmektedir. Dünya ölçeğinde bakıldığında doğayı kullanarak ya da doğa içinde çalışmanın sanatçılar arasmda çok yaygın bir eğilim olmadığını görülse de, bugünün sanatında konuyu ele alan sanatçıların oldukça ciddi ve inandırıcı yapıtları ile varlıklarım ortaya koydukları belirtmek isterim.
Because I work with nature in my art, I felt the need to find out if and what other artists did and do in this field. My quest led me through art history; from the Stonehenge till now nature in art is and was used on and of for different reasons The introduction is a definition of what I mean with nature in art and about the importance of expressing through art the connection to nature that man feels. The research led me to a better understanding of the Landart, the Arte Povera movement and the other European artists that work (ed) in and with nature in order to express their ideas after the late 1960's, Turkish contemporary artists working with nature and finally my own motives for working with and in nature. If on first sight the the way artists after the late I960' s work(ed) seems a startling new thing to do, which it is in a way, I found there are many connections with the past; especially thematically. Where before the late 1960's working with and in nature in art was used to express the divine, ephemerality, the duties of man, as a parergon for religious and political ideas and as a tool for recreation or protest against the established order, after the late 1960's many of these themes came back. I concluded that the most important change was and is not the subject-matter, although the weight of certain themes may have shifted, but rather it is the method of expression; the place and materials used, that changed dramatically after the late 1960's. Many of the reasons for these changes were initiated by the formation of new ideas that took place between 1900 and 1960. Even if worldwide working with and in nature is not practiced by a great amount of artists, the artists that are doing so in the present timespan, do in a very dedicated way which results in very convincing artworks.
