The thesis entitled as "1897 Ottoman-Greek War According to Greek Historiography" is composed of three parts. The aim of the thesis is to evaluate the Ottoman-Greek War according to the Greek surveys and contribute to the Turkish literature about the Greek perspective on this war. In the introduction, the events that took place in Greece from 1821 Greek Rebellion to 1897 are elaborated.
In the first part of the thesis, the two main reasons of the Ottoman-Greek War, the Cretan Issue and the Thessalian border conflict are explained. In particular, the importance of the Cretan issue for the relations between the Ottoman Empire and Greece, and how this problem caused war between the Ottoman Empire and Greece is analyzed. In addition, the activities of the Ethniki Eteria Society (National Society) in the Ottoman-Greek border in Thessaly were mentioned.
In the second part of the thesis, the main front of the Ottoman-Greek War, the Thessaly front, is discussed. The geographical, strategic, economic and cultural structure of the region of Thessaly and the military plans of the Turkish and Greek Armies is elaborated. Cities such as Larissa, Pharsala, Tirnova and Volos are mentioned. Also, effects of the defeat on the Thessaly front on the Greek people are observed. It is stated that Greek volunteers in Europe came to Thessaly to fight against the Ottoman Empire.
The third part of the thesis discusses the second and the lateral sides of the Ottoman-Greek War, Epirus. Additionally, the geographical structure of Epirus is mentioned. The Greek Army was more successful on the Epirus front than the Thessaly front. The Greek navy supported the ground troops on the Epirus front. Greeks living in Epirus' support the Greek Army, as well as Albanians support the Ottoman Army are also issued. |
