Timbuktu adı ilk olarak 1353'te şehri ziyaret eden İbn Battuta'nın
seyahatnamesinde geçmektedir. Şehir Sahra çölünün güney kıyısında, Nijer Nehri'nin
kuzeydoğuya doğru büklüm yaptığı nokta da 1100'lü yıllar da kurulmuştur. Timbuktu, 14.

The Timbuktu's name is first mentioned in the travel book of Ibn Battuta, who
visited the city in 1353. The city was founded in the 1100s on the southern shore of the
Sahara desert, at the point where the Niger River bends towards the northeast. Timbuktu,
showing a remarkable development since the XIVth century, started to become the leading
trade, science and culture city of the region. The main reason for the city to show this
development was trade. Timbuktu became one of the cities where salt brought from the
Taghaza and Taoudeni mines in the Sahara desert in the north and gold extracted from the
Ghana region in the south. Thanks to this trade cycle, a significant amount of wealth has
accumulated in the city and Timbuktu has made its name known with its abundance of
gold.
In the first part of the thesis, the name of the city, its geographical location,
climatic characteristics, establishment and physical development are emphasized. In the
same section, Mansa Musa's contribution to Timbuktu's name is discussed. In the second
part of the thesis, the political history of the city was mentioned and how it developed
under the roof of the Mali Empire, Tevaris and Songhay Empire was analyzed. In the third
part of the thesis, the administrative and judicial structure of the city was examined and it
was tried to reveal what kind of management mechanism and legal system Timbuktu had.
In the last part, Timbuktu's economic structure, scientific and intellectual life, social
structure are evaluated and the mosques of the city that have survived from the middle
ages are discussed. |
