They are two important intellectuals who left their mark on 19th century thought and literature. Although they grew up in different intellectual settings, they have faced similar human problems throughout their lives and they have played an important role in determining their own intellectual careers as well as the cultural, social, philosophical and literary character of the era they live in.
Both thinkers have basically produced some theories on how to maximize the possibilities of human beings from the axis of "the meaning and value of human life" problem. For Nietzsche, this is the way in which man discovers the worthlessness of all moral and religious values imposed on him by society without question, in a complete and fruitful nihilist manner and re-establishing life on the basis of the values it produces by getting rid of these values and returning to the power within itself. For Dostoevsky, man's way of realizing his own potential is to be connected with a pure heart to God, who is the only ultimate power superior to himself, and the faith of Christianity.
Although it may eventually lead to different paths, it can be said that the main goal of both intellectuals is self-realization. Moreover, both Nietzsche and Dostoevsky argue that this process of self-realization is a difficult and arduous process. According to them, it is difficult for a person to take his own life into his own hands, but it is an important effort and this difficulty is worth facing.
Within the framework of these parallels, in this master's thesis, Raskolnikov, who is the main character of "Crime and Punishment" which is one of the most significant works of Dostoevsky, is tried to be analysed in terms of Nietzsche's philosophy. Assumption intended to be tested could be summarized that Raskolnikov can be considered as a faltering character in the process of self-realization that Nietzsche mentioned and thanks to this finding, a new perspective on Nietzsche's philosophy can be gained from this novel of Dostoevsky.
Indeed, at the end of this thesis, it was concluded that the character of Raskolnikov exhibits a number of features that are quite suitable for interpretation in terms of Nietzsche's philosophy. At the end of this interpretation, it was identified that Raskolnikov alternates between two important stages -the herd and the free man- that Nietzsche determined in the process of self-realization. When this result has been evaluated, it is concluded that Raskolnikov is very helpful in understanding and interpreting Nietzsche's philosophy. |
