textual devices and this fact has been exemplified many times in the texts of analysis. From here, it is plausible to conclude that VIII. century written Turkish, though there are limited number of samples, has gone through a long process of evolution, before reaching its level of expressive achivement in the VIII. century. Finally, it should be indicated that the conclusions drawn in this study are limited to the sample Köktürk texts, and the study at this stage did not prefer to expand it generalizations to cover the said period. 188Köktürk society and texts, prerequisites for the comprehension of the linguistic material. The textual analysis of the inscriptions were carried out on the basis of the main standards of textuality, namely, cohesion and coherence, and the other standards were referred only when they appeared to be necessary. Thus, in accordance with the aim of the study, in the Chapters II and III, without going into the details of conceptual discussions, the working of the concept of cohesion was introduced, and the cohesive structure of the inscription was analysed. Chapter IV was reserved for the second standard, the coherence. In this respect, following the discussions on the approaches to coherence in the current textlinguistic literature, The Tonyukuk text was analysed in terms of its coherence aspect which sometimes requires reference to the other two texts that appear to be establishing an intertextual relation. In the process of analysis, the extralinguistic factors, the commucative situation, the text receiver and the text producer were taken into consideration and the necessity of reading all the three texts intertextually was emphasized for the complete comprehension of the semantic neucenses expressed in the texts. Especially, in the study of Tonyukuk text, which stands as the least studied text by the philologist when compared to the two other texts, it became clear that any linguistic study on this text should make use of the contemporary linguistic methodology primarily in the recogniton of the delibarate use of textual devices in the expression implied meanings. On the other hand, it appearred as a significant feature of the written Turkish of the VIII. century that it is capable of expressing the implied meanings through the competent use of 187textual devices and this fact has been exemplified many times in the texts of analysis. From here, it is plausible to conclude that VIII. century written Turkish, though there are limited number of samples, has gone through a long process of evolution, before reaching its level of expressive achivement in the VIII. century.
