11 ÖZET Çağdaş bir yazar olarak Iris Murdoch, her nekadar modern insanın edebiyatta en iyi "Geleneksel Gerçekçilik" yöntemiyle yansıtılabileceği görüşünde ise de, söylediklerinin aksine, Murdoch' ın eserlerinde deneyselliğe doğru bir kayma görülmektedir. Yazmaya başladığı ilk dönemden beri göze çarpan bu deneysellik, Murdoch' ın son romanlarında iyice belirginleşmektedir. Bu tez' in amacı, on dokuzuncu yüzyıl gerçekçi yazarlarına duyduğu hayranlığa rağmen, Murdoch' ın geleneksel anlamda katıksız bir gerçekçi yazar olmadığını göstermektir. Son romanları Nuns and Soldiers, The Philosopher's Pupil, The Good Apprentice, The hook and the Brotherhood ve The Message to the Planet' da görüldüğü gibi roman öğeleri ve şekil açısından Murdoch' ın deneysellik yanlısı olduğu görülmektedir. Giriş bölümünde önceki yüzyıl 'm gerçekçiliğine bir karşı çıkış olarak, bin dokuz yüz yirmilerde başlayan j deneysel yazarlığın kısa bir tarihçesi verilecektir. Daha sonra,- gerçeğin sübjektif olduğuna inandığı için Murdoch' ın objektif bir gerçeği yansıtamayacağını göstermek açısından, Murdoch 'ın felsefesine kısaca değinilecektir.HI Bu çalışmanın takip eden dört ana bölümünde, Murdoch' m romanlarının yüzeysel gerçekliğinin ötesinde, karakter ve mekan tasvirinde deneyselliğe doğru nasıl kaydığı ve romanlarındaki kurgu ötesi (metafictional) öğelerle, önceki metinlerin tekrarı olan (intertextual) özellikler detaylı bir şekilde incelenecektir. Murdoch1 m, kendine özgü hayat felsefesini tüm derinliği ile yansıtabilmek için, deneysel tekniklerden yararlanmakta olduğu da sonuç bölümünde belirtilecektir.
IV ABSTRACT Iris Murdoch, as a contemporary writer, favors Traditional Realism as the only means to reveal the modern human condition, however, it is still possible to see an inclination towards experimentation in her work. This experimental commitment which is apparent since the beginning of her writing career, becomes clearer in her latest novels. The aim of this dissertation is to show that, though Murdoch admires nineteenth century realists, she herself cannot be accepted as a pure realist in the nineteenth century sense, as she experiments with fictional elements and form as it is reflected in her latest novels such as Nuns and Soldiers, The Philosopher's Pupil, The Good Apprentice, The Book and the Brotherhood, and The Message to the Planet. The introduction gives a survey of experimental writing which started in the nineteen twenties, as a reaction against the Realism of the previous age. Then, it gives an account of Murdoch's philosophy in order to clarify that Murdoch could not reflect an objective reality because she believed in the subjectivity of truth.V The following four chapters which constitute the main body of this dissertation, deal, in detail, with how Murdoch experiments, through the realistic surface of her novels, with character and setting, and the metaf ictional and intertextual qualities in her work. The subject of the conclusion will be that Murdoch uses experimental techniques in order to reflect her specific philosophy of life in detail.
