Throughout history humans struggled with diseases with various methods and medications. Over the centuries natural products have always been the raw material of the medications, which have been used to fight against the diseases but demand to medications, which increased with advanced technologies, has led to born of synthetic drug production and became widespread. Nowadays, the ineffectiveness of synthetic drugs used against the diseases and due to increasing resistance in bacteria against the antibiotics, which causes a reduction in duration of the effectiveness of the drug and at the same time the identification of side effects of currently used medications, has led to the necessity to the determination of natural products that have lower side effect spectrum. As a result of the ineffectiveness of synthetic medications, scientist all around the World has started to do research on pharmacological activities of various plants which have been used as traditional medicine through the history and can be found in nature, and one of the plants under investigation on is bryophytes. Chinese and native Americans discovered the effectiveness of bryophytes on wound healing and reduction the risk of infection. From this discovery, there has been a lot of research conducted about bryophytes and bryophytes have been used in various fields. Bryophytes are classified under Bryophyta division that consists of 1 036 genera and approximately 18 409 species, which the numbers are changing depending on different systematic approaches. Bryophytes, which have rich diversity, strong pharmacological activities, simple structures, and cultivation potential give hope to find way out of the ineffectiveness of medications in these days. In this thesis the antimicrobial activities of 6 different bryophyte samples on 20 different strains and the antioxidant capacities were analyzed in vitro by DPPH method. Also, antibiofilm activities of bryophyte samples against Listeria innocua strain are identified. |
