Galata ve çevresi, tarihsel süreç içinde birçok farklı ve içice yaşantıya ev sahipliği yapmış olduğundan çok katmanlı bir dokuya sahiptir ve günümüzde de değişim içerisinde olduğu görülmektedir. Çalışma alanı olan Galata'nın eski Sur İçi bölgesinde (intra muros), dünü, bugünü ve yarını bir arada görebilmek mümkündür. Bu çalışma, Galata'nın tarihsel süreç içinde kuruluşundan günümüze kadar geçirdiği değişimin belgelenmesinde bir yöntem ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır. "Korumanın ilk adımı tanımaktır" ilkesinden hareketle, bölgeye dair bilgiler kapsamlı bir şekilde ele alınıp tarihsel, sosyal, ekonomik, kentsel değişimler sistemli olarak bir araya getirilmiştir. Bu incelemede, geçmişin izleri araştırılarak kentin katmanları, katmanların tarihsel derinliği belirlenmiş ve çeşitli dönemler halinde incelenen kent dokusu bugünkü durumu ile karşılaştırılmıştır. Dönemler arasındaki süreklilik ve kopukluk durumlarını okuyabilmek için hazırlanan haritalar üzerinden, yerleşmenin başlangıcından günümüze kent dokusu ve anıtsal yapılar bağlamında geçirdiği gelişim ve değişiminin izlenmesi sağlanarak bölgeyi tanımaya katkıda bulunulmuştur.
Galata and its environment has a multilayered texture due to playing host to many livings which are different and intimate and it is seen that Galata is in a state of flux in nowadays. In Intra Muros of Galata, the field of study, it is possible to see the past, today and the future together. The aim of the study is revealing a method to document the change of Galata in historic process since its foundation to nowadays. With the referance of the principle which is "The first step of protection is recognition" the changes of historical, social, economic and urban were systematicly aggregated by dealing with related information in an inclusively way. In this study, layers of town and historical depth of the layers were determined by examining tracks of the past and the urban texture which are examined with various periods was compared with the present state. Based on the maps, prepared to read continuity and disconnection situations between periods, following up the development and change of the residential area in the context of urban texture and monumental structure since its foundation was provided to make contribution to the recognition of the area.
