There have been a lot of arguments about the quality of the present educationalsystem. Among these arguments there is a common point that most of the students lackthe ability to think critically. Indeed, critical thinking should be a way of life. It isessential throughout one?s life to be a successful learner in education, to be a successfulperson in business, and to be an autonomous citizen in society. The current education system unfortunately cannot do much to foster criticalthinking since it is rooted in teacher-centered instead of learner-centered. Teachers andtextbooks are considered as the only source of knowledge. Students have little or noinvolvement in the decision making process. It is vital that as long as studentsexperience and give meaning to the material being studied, they can make theinformation their own. The students should constantly ask questions rather than justmemorize the information. Otherwise, they cannot become independent and criticalthinkers. As far as the educational system values ?critical thinking?, students canactivate independent thoughts. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship betweenliterature and critical thinking. It attempts to answer the questions whether literature, especially short stories, stimulate the first year intermediate level undergraduatestudents? critical thinking skills in EFL classes. It also questions whether the students?responses focus on lower-order or higher-order thinking skills when they study shortstories. It is assumed, though, that the students? written responses for the short storieswill concentrate on higher-order thinking skills.Since the primary focus was on how and to what extent short stories improve thecritical thinking skills of first year intermediate level undergraduates in their writtenresponses in English Language and Literature Department at Ankara University, thestudents were asked to read four short stories and jot down their personal responses tothe stories. The implementation lasted four weeks. The students were given one story tobe read for each week. Totally they studied four stories. The students were asked to readthe stories and then write their personal responses. The students were expected to jotdown their feelings, thoughts, and reactions to the story events and characters. Theywere also expected to make associations with their own lives or to make connectionswith other stories or books they read. The number of students? responses for each storywas counted sentence by sentence and totaled to find out the percentage of responses aslower-order and higher-order thinking skills according to Bloom?s Taxonomy. The findings of the study indicated that, as it was assumed, most of the students?written responses fell into the category of evaluation, which was the last category inhigher-order thinking level. On the other hand, it was observed that the students had stillsome difficulties in thinking critically. Although greater integration of the students?responses was in the category of evaluation, the other two categories of higher-orderthinking level, analysis and synthesis, resulted in lower percentages than expected. But itis believed that if the students are guided and exposed to syllabuses which promotecritical thinking, there can be more improvements in students? higher-order thinkingskills. |
