Bu tez çalışmasının amacı Charles Dickens'ın Büyük Umutlar (1861) adlı eseri ışığında insanların sahip oldukları tutku ve hırsları incelemektir. Çalışmanın ikinci bölümünde hırs ve tutku kavramlarının açıklamalarına yer verilmiş; tutku ve akıl kavramları Plato ve Aristo gibi ünlü filozofların düşünceleri ışığında incelenmiştir. Üçüncü bölümde, eserin yazıldığı Viktorya dönemi hakkında bilgi verilmiştir. Bu bölümde ayrıca eser ve yazar ile ilgili bilgilere yer verilmiştir. Dördüncü bölümde Büyük Umutlar (1861) eserindeki karakterlerin hırsları ve tutkuları incelenmiştir. Karakterlerin neden hırslı ve tutkulu insanlar olduklarına değinilerek, hırs ve tutku duygularının insanlar üzerindeki olumlu ve olumsuz sonuçları incelenmiştir. The aim of this thesis is to examine passion and ambition of people in the light of the novel Great Expectations (1861) written by Charles Dickens. In the second chapter of the study, the meanings of passion and ambition were explained and the concepts of passion and reason were examined according to the views of well-known philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle. In the third chapter, some information was given about the Victorian Age in which the novel was written. Besides, some information about the literary genre of the novel and information about the life of Charles Dickens were given in this chapter. In the fourth chapter, passion and ambition of the characters in Great Expectations (1861) were examined. The positive and negative consequences of passion and ambition on people were examined by mentioning the reasons of people's becoming passionate and ambitious.
