In the scope of this dissertation, the use of co-verbal gestures for educational purposes concerning the teaching of French as a foreign language in Turkey was examined. Although teachers' co-verbal gestures are less studied than their verbal discourses, they essentially perform several functions in the teaching of foreign languages, such as transmission of information, classroom management and student assessment. In this context, the aim of this study consists of describing and analysing how French teachers' use of co-verbal gestures varies when the learning content and the student level are held constant. Besides, the relationship between co-verbal gestures and speech, and the implications of this relationship were also emphasized. The study group of this research includes three teachers giving French courses to prep class students in a private French high school in Istanbul. The data were collected in three ways: the audio-visual class recordings, a survey intended to assess the attitudes of the study group towards kinesic behaviours and the audio-visual recordings of the auto-evaluation sessions intended to confront teachers with their self-images. First of all, the audio-visual class recordings were transferred to a software designed to treat verbal and visual data; afterwards, the content comprising speech and co-verbal gestures was coded on four axes according to the categories derived from the related literature: speech, gesture type, gesture function and gesture amplitude. In the following process, the data were subjected to both descriptive-quantitative and qualitative content analyses. In the light of the descriptive-quantitative analysis, it was found that each teacher made use of co-verbal gestures for educational purposes in different ratios. Furthermore, by taking into account the common gesture strategies practised by the study group, subcategories concerning the use of co-verbal gestures were determined within the qualitative content analysis. In the conclusion part, based on the findings, suggestions were made for the program of the teaching French as a foreign language.
