Sam Mendes) ve Truman Show (1998, Yön. The present study aims to examine the 1990s Hollywood movies Fight Club (1999, Dir. David Fincher), American Beauty (1999, Dir. Sam Mendes) and Truman Show (1998, Dir. Peter Weir) over the themes of consumer society, media, masculinity in crisis and violence in light of the economic, social and political developments in the 1990s based on the consideration that the analysis of the representations in cultural products is significant and valuable, and to discuss how critical the movies are and what the boundaries are in their criticism. The main argument of the study is that the movies analyzed within the study do offer a critical point of view regarding consumer society, media, masculinity in crisis and violence and differentiate themselves from the classical narrative cinema in terms of the critical language they use and the stylistic and technical features they have, and thus they wink at the "alternative" opportunities; however, they fail to cross the ideological boundaries and leave the safe shelters offered by the capitalist economic system, and the criticism can only be expressed within certain boundaries. Therefore, the present study first reviews the relevant literature and analyzes the themes within the theoretical framework, and then it conducts the film analyses including the use of cinematography in order to produce/reproduce meaning. The writer of the present study considers that analyzing how the above-mentioned themes are represented through the films, each is a political and social construction, within a historical and social context is significant in that it contributes to understanding of how dominant and "alternative" meanings are reproduced and transmitted in these films. The study concludes that the Hollywood cinema fails to ignore the economic and ideological codes it depends and the criticisms end or become invalid once faced with commercial concerns. However, the movies are considered significant in that they address the above-mentioned issues even on superficial grounds. The movies are determined to at least differentiate themselves from many mainstream movies confirming the dominant ideology and reproduce stereotyped concepts and values, and to take a step towards enabling the viewers to think about these issues and towards shaking the foundations of stereotyped thoughts.
