yılında, beş yeni GMPEs, Yeni Nesil Azalım yer hareketleri ("NGA-West," yada
"NGA") Pasifik Deprem Mühendisliği Araştırma Merkezi (PEER) tarafından
koordine edilen projenin bir parçası olarak yayınlandı. California (US) için

Two devastating earthquakes with moment magnitudes of 7.2 and 5.7 occurred on
October 23, 2011 (Van-Ercis earthquake) and November 9, 2011 (Van-Edremit
earthquake), respectively, in the Van Province of the eastern Turkey. The Van-Ercis¸
and Van-Edremit earthquakes caused 604 and 38 fatalities, respectively, and heavy
damage to buildings and other structures, particularly in Ercis¸ town and Van City.
Van-Erciş earthquake resulted from the movement of a 50 km long and 20 km wide
thrust fault trending about E–W direction between Van Lake and Erçek Lake at the
north of Van. Van-Erciş earthquake's epicentre was about 30 km north of the Van
City centre, at the location of Tabanlı Village and The epicentre of Van-Edremit
earthquake was located near Edremit, which is a town on the eastern shore of Lake
Van about 16 km to the south of Van City centre.
23 October 2011 Van-Merkez earthquake is unique from several aspects. Very high
number of aftershocks within short period after the event, was not experienced
previously. Within the first week of the earthquake, there happened 114 earthquakes
with magnitudes between 4.0 and 4.9 and 7 earthquakes with magnitudes bigger then
Ml:5.0. Within the first month after the event daily average aftershock number is
around 180 earthquakes. By 09 December 2011, the number of aftershocks reached
to 6284.
The area between Van and Erciş is tectonically complex and there are several faults
with different characteristics. The reason for such big amount of aftershocks and
diversity of the focal mechanism solutions are due to this tectonic complexity. Very
generally, earthquake with Mw:7.0 at 19 km. depth activated this systems and small
scaled faults triggered one and each other within this period and increased the
earthquake activity.
The Van-Edremit earthquake of November 9, 2011 is not an aftershock of the
October 23, 2011 Van-Ercis¸ earthquake, as it has a different faulting mechanism.
However, there is no doubt that it was triggered due to the variation of crustal
stresses induced by the October 23, 2011 earthquake.
Erciş is located over a soft ground prone to ground liquefaction. Liquefaction and
associated ground deformations were evident in this earthquake. Despite the low
moment magnitude of Van-Edremit earthquake, some liquefaction happend after the
earthquake, probably it was the smallest magnitude earthquake to cause liquefaction
in Turkey so far. As there was no well defined fault scarp, some researchers claimed
that a blind thrust faulting caused the earthquake. In such cases that ground near
surface is quite soft, the deformation caused by thrust faulting would be diluted over
a great area and also since the region was covered by snow, any surface rupture
resulted from the November 09, 2011 Van-Edremit earthquake could not be
observed.
The earthquake damage was determined to be high at local areas of relatively poor
soil conditions such as cohesionles and loose soil, high groundwater. In addition to
the soil conditions, there is no doubt that the use of low quality materials and low
construction technologies have caused higher damage at central districts of Van
province. Considering the soil conditions, both ground deformation (soil
amplification, liquefaction) and cycling loading will increase the loss of lives and
property in the central districts of Van province.
Ground motion at particular site due to earthquakes is influenced by source, travel
path and local site conditions, the first relates to the size and source mechanism of
the earthquake. The second describes the path effect of the earth as waves travel at
some depth from the source to the site. The third describes the effects of the upper
hundreds of meters of rock and soil and the surface topography at the site. Strong
ground shaking cause severe damages to man-made facilities and unfortunately,
sometimes induce losses of human lives.
The ground-motion prediction equations (GMPEs) developed as part of theNext
Generation Attenuation of Ground Motions (NGA-West) project in 2008 are
becoming widely used in seismic hazard analyses. However, these new models are
considerably more complicated than previous GMPEs, and they require several more
input parameters. Ground-motion prediction equations (GMPEs), giving groundmotion
intensity mea- sures such as peak ground motions or response spectra as a
function of earthquake magnitude and distance, are important tools in the analysis of
seismic hazard.
First part of this study involves seismic characteristics of the earthquake and
evaluation of strong ground motion characteristics. Acceleration, velocity
displacement- time, Spectral acceleration, velocity and displacement-period, Fourier
amplitude spectrum, effective time, Response spectral accelerations of near fault
recorded datas were investigated. At second part, 4 free-field accelerograms recorded
at rupture distances of less than 200 km during the Van-Ercis earthquake and 3 freefield
accelerograms recorded at rupture distances of less than 100 km during the
Van-Edremit earthquake were used to compare the 2011 Van earthquakes ground
motions with those predicted by the recent Next Generation Attenuation (NGA)
ground-motion models developed using global data from shallow crustal
earthquakes.
National Strong Motion Network operated by AFAD calculated the acceleration
values for these earthquakes. The highest acceleration value recorded at Muradiye
station after 23 October 2011 earthquake and the values are 178.5 cm/sn2 (N-S
Component), 168.5 cm/sn2 (E-W Component) and 75.5cm/sn2 (Vertical
Component). The highest acceleration value recorded at Van Station after 09
November 2011 earthquake and the values are 148.1 cm/sn2 (N-S Component),
245.9 cm/sn2 (E-W Component) and 150.5 cm/sn2 (Vertical Component). The
values of Edremit Station are 65.7 cm/sn2 (N-S Component), 102.6 cm/sn2 (E-W
Component) and 44.3 cm/sn2 (Vertical Component).
The distribution of damaged buildings observed from October 23 and November 9,
2011 Van earthquakes shows that a major portion of damage occurred at settlement
areas underlain by alluvial soils. The effect of alluvial soil on strong ground motion
and structural damage can be seen by comparing two strong ground motion records
xxv
of the Van province, earthquake of 09 November 2011 (Mw:5.6). One record at
Edremit on travertine bedrock had a peak horizontal acceleration of 0.10 g. The other
one, at the city center of Van province, at a distance of 15 km from the epicenter in
Quaternary alluvium, had the accelaration value of 0.25 g. The effect of soil on the
ground motion is about 2.5. Therefore, in order to minimize the possible damage of a
potential earthquake, ground conditions should be considered at the Van settlement
area.
Researchers who developed the NGA models, have expressed the importance of
local ground conditions specially for distances greater than 80 kilometers. Here I08
model cannot be used, because the value of Vs30 for corresponding stations are not
larger than 450 m/s. As a result, the closest estimate in terms of PSA values belongs
to CB08 model for Van-Muradiye station, which the epicentral distance is between
50 and 100 km, in Van-Edremit earthquake with a strike slip fault system. But
generally in this study BA08 model, may give more favorable results |
