Kıta Avrupası, 19. yüzyılda sosyal, ekonomik ve politik bağlamda pek çok dönüşüm geçirmiştir. Sosyal değişimler ve demokratik ortamın gelişmesi, Avrupalı entelektüellere kendilerini serbestçe ifade edebilecekleri alanlar sağlamış, farklı fikirler, farklı sanat kavram ve yaklaşımları rahatlıkla tartışılır hale gelmiştir. Bu dönüşümlerle 19. yüzyıl, sanatı ve sanatçıyı da derinden etkilemiştir. 19. yüzyılda Avrupa'nın buluşma noktası Paris, burjuvazinin merkezi olmasının yanı sıra dünyanın dört bir yanından gelen sanatçılara da ev sahipliği yapmıştır. Sanat, Académie des Beaux-Arts'dan bağımsız hale gelmiş, burjuvazinin alıcı, eleştirmen ve satıcı olarak önemli yere sahip olduğu yeni bir sanat piyasası ortaya çıkmıştır. 19. yüzyıl Fransası'nda sanatçı kariyer gelişimini sorgulayan bu çalışmada, sanat yaşamını etkileyen sosyal dinamikler, sanat yönetimi politikaları ve burjuvazi hakimiyetinde gelişen yeni sanat düzeni incelenmekte, empresyonist sanatçıların akademik sistemin çöküşü üzerindeki olası etkileri ile sanat eleştirmenleri ve tacirlerden oluşan yeni sanat sisteminin gelişimi üzerinde durulmaktadır. Continental Europe had a number of transformations during 19th century, within the frame of social, economic and political contexts. Social changes and the development of a democratic atmosphere provided to European intellectuals, public spaces in which they could unreservedly express themselves and where various opinions, artistic notions and approaches were liberally discussed. With these evolutions the 19th century had also influenced deeply the art scene and its artists. Paris was the European artistic and cultural capital of the 19th century but it also served as the very centre of the bourgeoisie and welcomed artists coming from all over the world. Within this context, the art became then independent from the Académie des Beaux-Arts and one witnessed the rise of a new art market where the bourgeoisie accomplished all key roles as art dealers, collectors and critics. This research studying the artist's career development in France during 19th century, focuses on dynamics affecting the art life, art direction and management politics and the new art life organisation and market. The research also insists on the potential influence of impressionists over the collapse of the academic system and highlights the generation of a new art system constituted by art critics and art dealers.
