This thesis devises a new control system for an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) so that it can regulate
its states in case they depart from its design conditions. A new complete numerical model is
implemented which is verified considering mass and energy conservation of the overall system, and
validated against an experimental benchmark study found in the literature. The developed model's
novelty is its capability of estimating pressure levels based on the mass distribution of the working
fluid along system's subcomponents. In particular, a liquid receiver tank that contains a fixed supply
amount of working fluid is considered as part of the condenser to capture the mass distribution of the
system and pressure variations in time accurately. Simulations revealed that the level of liquid and
the sub-cooling in the liquid receiver are related and can be used as an indicator for the state of the
liquid receiver. In fact, the state of the liquid receiver reflects the state of the system. A cascade
control system is devised based on a strategy that tracks the degree of superheating using a tank
parameter as the middling factor, which is defined using both the level of liquid and the degree of
sub-cooling in the liquid receiver. The developed control system aims to regulate the degree of
superheating at the outlet of the expander close to a set-point by changing the rotational speeds of the
expander. The set point is selected in a way that at least a small superheating exists to avoid a blind
zone for temperature sensors within the saturated mixture region. If the cycle falls into the blind zone,
the control system starts relying solely on the tank parameter which suggests an increase in the
expander's rotational speed. Two possible remedies to avoid the blind zone problem is suggested;
predefined system specific rates of increase and based on evaporator and condenser pressure levels.
There is a risk that the system can become unstable as the predefined system specific rate can add a
high disturbance while utilizing condenser pressure levels, even though limited to smooth changes,
are shown to self-regulate the ORC cycle successfully through numerical simulations. In fact, the
power output with the devised control system is improved by up to 15% for the cases considered in
the benchmark study. |
