The main aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between eatingattitudes and behaviors and family environment, self-esteem and perfectionism inhigh school female students. Participants have completed Participant InformationForm, Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-40), Family Assessment Device (FAD), AdultSources of Self-Esteem Inventory (ASSEI) and Perfectionism subscale of theScreening Conditions for Anorexia Nervosa Scale (SCANS). Totally 298 femalestudents from three different high schools in Istanbul that were assumed to reflect thehigh SES have participated in the study. Seventy five of these girls who had thehighest EAT-40 scores and took place in the up 25 % were assumed as havingabnormal eating attitudes and behaviors whereas 77 girls who had the lowest EAT-40 scores and took place in the bottom 25 % were assumed as having normal eatingattitudes and behaviors. It was examined whether there is any difference between thetwo groups in terms of family environment, self-esteem and perfectionism. Further, itwas examined to what degree these variables predicted the eating attitudes andbehaviors. It was found that eating attitudes and behaviors were related to familyenvironment, self-esteem and perfectionism. According to the results of t-testanalysis, the families of girls with abnormal eating attitudes and behaviors were lessfunctional and the self-esteem scores of the girls in abnormal group weresignificantly lower than the normal group. All these outcomes were incorrespondence with the hypothesis. However, no significant relationship was foundbetween the two groups in terms of perfectionism. Stepwise regression analysisrevealed that self-esteem predicted the eating attitudes and behaviors. Further, it wasfound that girls in abnormal group receive more negative criticisms about theirweight from their close environments, more frequently try to lose weight and morefrequently follow publications about thinness in mass media. Results of this studywere discussed according to the other significant studies in the literature that arerelated to the etiology of eating disorders.Key words: abnormal eating attitudes and behaviors, family environment, selfesteem, perfectionism.
