Bu çalışmada, Viktorya dönemi gerçekçi romanları arasında sayılan Middlemarch romanının sosyolojik bir bakış açısıyla toplumsal cinsiyet bağlamında analiz edilmesi hedeflenmiştir.Çalışmanın ilk bölümünde, edebiyat sosyolojisi ile birlikte konunun ana kavramları olan cinsiyet ve toplumsal cinsiyeti açıklamak üzere, bazı tanımlara ve toplumsal cinsiyet kavramının tarihçesine yer verilmiştir. Daha sonra cinsiyet rollerinin bireyler tarafından nasıl kazanıldığı ve cinsiyetler arası farklılıkların ne şekilde oluştuğuna ilişkin, sosyo-psikolojik, sosyolojik ve feminist kuramların en yaygın olanları özetlenerek, toplumsal cinsiyet olgusuyla ilgili kuramsal literatür gözden geçirilmiştir.Tezin birinci bölümünün sonunda 19. Yüzyıl İngilteresinde kadının toplumdaki konumunu şekillendiren entelektüel ve endüstriyel değişimler ana hatları ile incelenmiş ve toplumsal cinsiyetin oluşumu ve dönemin değişmez normlarının yeniden yapılandırılması, Victoria dönemi edebiyatında kadına boyun eğdiren dönemin kültür ve kurumları analiz edilmiştir.Çalışmanın ikinci bölümünde George Eliot'ın biyografisi ve hayatındaki değişimler incelenmiş ve ?Middlemarch? romanı üslup, mekân ve zaman ile karakterler açısından analiz edilmeye çalışılmıştır. İkinci bölümün sonunda romandaki kadın karakterlerin sorunları ile yazarın bu karakterleri ele alışı analiz edilmiştir. Middlemarch'ta kadın karakterlerin romanın merkezinde olmalarından dolayı, analiz de sırasıyla eğitimsel, mesleki ve sosyal uzantılarıyla kadınların ikincil konuma itilişi, evlilikten beklentileri, hayal kırıklıkları ve mutsuzluk karşısında gösterdikleri farklı tepkiler incelenmiştir.
In this study it is aimed to analyse the Middlemarch, one of which is the most popular realist novels of Victorian Age, in terms of sociological point of view and social gender.In the first part of the study, we have tried to explain some of the terms such as sociology of literature, sex and social gender which are the main topics of our study and tried to give some more information about their historical background. After that, it has been tried to explain how the gender roles are acquaired by individuals and how the gender differences are formed by summarizing the most common theoretical paradigms such as socio-psychological, sociological and feminist theories.At the end of the first part of the thesis, the intellectual and industrial changes which have shaped the position of women in society in the nineteen century, the formation of social gender and the transformation of the unchangeable norms of the era, the culture and the institutions which subjugated women in the Victorian literature are analysed.In the second part of our study, George Eliot?s biography, the changes in her life together with the style, time and place, the characters in ?Middlemarch? are tried to be analysed. At the end of the second part the problems of the women characters and the way how the writer handles the issue are tried to be analysed. As the women characters are in the center of the novel, we have tried to explain how they became subordinate in educational, occupational and social issues, their expectations from marriage, dissapointments, and lastly their different reactions to unhappiness.
