In this study, the appearance of urban and urbanization in the movies shot in 2000's particularly in İstanbul is analyzed. Focusing on what and how urban and urbanization are screened in the Turkish cinema in 2000's, this study handles the issue of the urbanization shown in cinema through this conceptual and historical categorization: urbanization of the Nation-State (1923-1950); urbanization of Labour Force (1950-1980); urbanization of Capital (after 1980). In this study, although the movies set in the urban during the period called 2000's cinema that were shot after 1990 are mainly analyzed, the previous period of the history of Turkish cinema is not ignored and the period since the proclamation of the Republic up to 1990 are examined, too. Films of the directors included in 2000's cinema are selected whether they are shot in urban or rural. While determining the movies to be examined, "art" films are chosen but "popular" film samples were excluded. In the three urbanization periods, 42 films are analyzed in total. "Frame analysis" method is used when the movies are analyzed in a cinematographic sense. Films are also analyzed looking at their scales and shooting styles. Manifestation of İstanbul as a metropolis in movies has varied form period to period. Urbanization has fragmented, separated and severed cities and this process began after the transformation created by January 24 Decisions and Military Coup in September 12, 1980 which paved the way for free market economy. In this period called "urbanization of capital", the "showcase" of Turkey is Istanbul. However, in 2000's cinemas İstanbul offers a threat with its absence. This process resulting from the disintegration of the city turns İstanbul as an irrelevant space. In the movies, İstanbul is threatening since it is not quite possible to live in this irrelevant space and to settle down on it. The characters of the movies in 2000's Turkish cinema feel irrelevant in the space and in the city which they reside in; so, they are unrest in Istanbul and live in distress. The characters cannot establish a relationship with their bodies which can be considered as their belongings and also as a space; as if their bodies are irrelevant parts of themselves. The bodies as a space of sense of belonging are shown in the movies through such acts as their imprisonment, harassment, and torture; thus they turn into an irrelevant space.
