ABSTRACT ALKENE AND ALKYNE DERIVATIVES OF GROUP 6 METAL CARBONYLS: SYNTHESIS, STRUCTURE AND REACTIVITY Saldamli, Saltuk Ph.D., Department of Chemistry Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Saim Özkâr February 2001, 141 pages Some alkyne and alkene complexes of Group 6 metal-carbonyls were synthesized starting with hexacarbonylmetal(O) and characterized by using Mass, IR, UV-VIS, 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopies as well as by elemental analysis and single crystal X-Ray Crystallography. UV irradiation of M(CO)6 in the presence of excess bis(trimethylsilyl)acetylene (BTMSA) in alkane solution yields the CO-photosubstitution products, M(CO)5(ti2-BTMSA) (1-3), for all of the Group 6 metals, in the case of molybdenum the irradiation gives a second CO-photosubstitution by BTMSA forming &a/7s-Mo(CO)4Cn2-BTMSA)2 (4), having two alkynes in trans- orthogonal arrangement. The M(CO)5Cn2-BTMSA) complexes are labile towards ligand substitution and can be used as starting material for the preparation of some metal-carbonyl derivatives which are otherwise inaccessible. Depending on the incoming ligand, these complexes give alkyne and/or carbonyl substitution. Under CO atmosphere, the M(CO)s(r|2-BTMSA) complexes undergo conversion to M(CO)6. However, the reaction of W(CO)5(r|2-BTMSA) (3) with 13CO shows that it undergoes not only BTMSA but also CO substitution; thus yielding W(CO)6-n(13CO)n or W(CO)5-m(13CO)mCn2-BTMSA), respectively, depending on the reaction time and temperature. With ethylene the complexes 1-3 give the new M(CO)5(ri2-ethylene) complexes as the sole substitution product, which can be isolated from the reaction solution by crystallization. W(CO)5(ti2-BTMSA) give also alkyne and carbonyl substitution in the presence of alkylisonitriles. When 3 reacts with R-NC (R: lButyl, 'propyl, cyclohexyl), the substitution products W(CO)5(CN-R), c/>W(CO)4(CN-R)2 and /&c-W(CO)3(CN-R)3 are formed. PF3 is another ligand that gives CO and BTMSA substitution reaction with W(CO)5(ti2-BTMSA). With 3 the reaction proceeds over the complex as-W(CO)4(PF3)Cn2-BTMSA) (14), yielding different products like /77e/--W(CO)3(PF3)3, *ra/7s-W(CO)2(PF3)3(Ti2-BTMSA), etc. With 4, /77er-Mo(CO)3(PF3)3 is nearly the sole product accompanied by higher substitution products, only in trace amounts. Keywords: Group 6 metals, metal carbonyl complexes, alkyne, bis(trimethylsilyl)acetylene, olefin, carbon monoxide, alkylisonitrile, phosphorous triflouride. IV
