Doğu Anadolu bölgesinin Yukarı Fırat bölümünde yer alan Solhan ilçesi Bingöl iline bağlı olup bu ilin kuzeydoğusunda yer alır. Solhan, doğusunda Muş, batısında Bingöl, kuzeyinde Karlıova(Bingöl) ve Varto(Muş), güneyinde de Diyarbakır ve Genç(Bingöl) ilçesi ile çevrelenmiştir. İstanbul-İran transit yolu üzerinde olup, Bingöl'e 56 km, Muş'a ise 58 km uzaklıktadır. Araştırmada Solhan ilçe merkezinin beşeri ve ekonomik coğrafya özellikleri ele alınarak, coğrafi bir bakış açısıyla ortaya konulmaya çalışılmıştır. İlçenin özellikleri incelenirken genel eserlerin yanı sıra, çeşitli periyodiklerden de yararlanılmıştır. Bunun yanında, gözlemlerden de büyük ölçüde faydalanma yoluna gidilmiştir. Çalışma alanı, elverişli konumu sayesinde önemli kara ve demiryolları üzerinde bulunmaktadır. Ancak bu konum, İlçenin gelişimine beklenen katkıyı pek sağlayamamıştır. Yerleşim sahası yeryüzü şekillerine ve ulaşıma bağlı olarak sınırlanmıştır. Son yıllarda İlçenin gelişimi genel olarak yer şekillerinin daha sade olduğu ve D-300 karayolunun da geçtiği güzergâh olan batı yönünde gelişmiştir. Yörenin ekonomisinde hayvancılığın payı oldukça fazladır. Nitekim şehrin çoğu geçimini hayvancılıktan sağlamaktadır. Çalışma sahasındaki sanayi son yıllarda biraz gelişim gösterse de sanayinin gelişmesini sağlayıcı önlemlerin alınması gerekmektedir. Solhan, sahip olduğu doğal çevre özellikleri, önemli bir ulaşım arteri üzerindeki konumu ve turizm potansiyeli ile gelişmeye açık bir ilçedir. Çalışmada, şehrin bu tür özellikleri ön plana çıkarılarak sorunlar tespit edilmeye ve öneriler getirilmeye çalışılmıştır.
Solhan, where is situated on the Upper Euphrates Subdivision of Eastern Anatolia Region, is a district of Bingöl and situated on the North of this province. The district of Solhan is surrounded by Muş to the east, Bingöl to the west, Karlıova and Varto to the north and Diyarbakır and Genç to the south. It is 56 km away from Bingöl and 58 km away from Muş and is on the İstanbul-Iran transit route. There hasn't been a detailed geographical research about the district so far constitutes the starting point of this study. In the research, Solhan is tried to be presented with a geographical point of view by discussing the features of human and economic geography of the downtown of the district. A great deal of periodicals is made use of as well as the general works while analysing the features of the province. Besides that, some observations are also made use of to a great extent. The field of study is situated on the important highways and railways thanks to its convenient location. However, this location cannot contributed much to the development of the district. The settlement area is limited due to the landforms. The development in the district has been expanding recently to the west where the landforms are usually plain. The stockbreeding plays an important role in the development of the district. Indeed the majority of the city praide their living by stockbreeding. Some precautions need to be taken for the development of the industry in the district. Solhan is an open to development district with its natural environment features, tourism potential and its location an important transportation artery. In this study, the problems are tried to be determined and some pieces of advice are tried to be put forward by highlighting the features of the district mentioned above.
